REIAC Distinguished Lecture
The fall REIAC Distinguished Lecture occurred on October 8 at 4:30 p.m. in the GSU student center. Marvin Banks, Jr., Retired CFO of Gables Residential Trust delivered the lecture. The presentation was followed by a reception and real estate career networking event. The lecture was open to the public.
Honorary Board Breakfast
The Departments' Honorary Board held its fall breakfast meeting October 2. The economy was the major topic under discussion.

GSU Authors Win Best Paper Prize
Associate professor Karen M. Gibler and Ph.D. student J. Sherwood Clements III have won the American Real Estate Society 2008 Best Paper on Seniors Housing Award sponsored by the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing and Care Industry (NIC) for "Movement of Older Americans into Retirement Housing." They presented the paper at the ARES conference in April. |

Applications due for REGA Mentoring Program
August 25 is the deadline for students to apply for the R.E.G.A. mentoring program. R.E.G.A. is an association of 150 of Atlanta's top young commercial real estate professionals. Each GSU real estate student selected is matched with a mentor in the organization and attends the monthly R.E.G.A. meetings the third Tuesday evening each month. Applications are available in the lobby of the Department of Real Estate. The completed application, résumé and statement of interest must be submitted to the Department of Real Estate by August 25, 2008. |

 Views from the Green
The 95-degree heat failed to dampen spirits of a record 101 registrants during the Real Estate Alumni Group's third annual Views From the Green June 9, at Indian Hills Country Club. The annual tournament raised funds to support the Department.  BIE Grant Supports Gibler Visit to Japan
An IIB Business International Education Grant helped fund Dr. Karen M. Gibler's May trip to Tokyo to meet with the retirement housing association and tour four seniors housing facilities. Dr. Euehun Lee, GSU marketing alumnus, joined Dr. Gibler for the tours. While in Tokyo, Dr. Gibler met with GSU real estate alumni Hiro Isobe and Masaki Mori as well as members of CoreNet and ARES staff.
Dr. Ooi Visits GSU
Dr. Joseph Ooi of the National University of Singapore and Pennsylvania State University visited with the real estate Ph.D. students on May 6, talking about the habits of successful researchers.
Papers Accepted for Publication
The Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education has accepted "Evaluating Tiers of Real Estate Publications in the U.S.," written by Dr. Gibler with Ph.D. candidate Vivek Sah and former student Guo Chen. Dr. Gibler's "Examining Retirement Housing Preferences among International Retiree Migrants," written in conjunction with colleagues in Spain, was accepted by International Real Estate Review.
 GSU Well-Represented at ARES Conference
The department had one of the largest contingents at the American Real Estate Society meeting in Captiva Island, Florida, April 16-19. Drs. Gallimore, Gibler and Ziobrowski were in attendance presenting papers, along with Ph.D. students Sherwood Clements, Frank GyamfI-Yeboah, Toyokazu Imazeki, Changha Jin, SeungHan Ro, Vivek Sah and Xiaorong Zhou (pictured at the pool party). Dr. Gibler also attended the ARES Board of Directors meeting.
 REIAC Challenge Winners Announced
On April 24, 2008, student teams from the Department of Real Estate participated in the REIAC Challenge. Competing for scholarships provided by the Real Estate Investment Advisory Council, the teams presented and defended their BeltLine development proposals offering creative solutions to environmental remediation challenges before a professional panel of judges. The competition took place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 24 of Aderhold Learning Center.
The members of the winning team are Seth Coan, Paul Welch Goggins, Andrea Ivory and Nick West.

GSU Faculty Ranked for Real Estate Research
GSU's faculty ranked sixth in the world in terms of publishing in the core academic real estate journals between 2001 and 2006 and eighth globally when a broader range of nine real estate journals was considered. Dr. Karen M. Gibler, Associate Professor in the Department of Real Estate, was individually ranked 23rd amongst global researchers, one of only two female researchers ranked. Economics Professor Dr. Geoffrey K. Turnbull was also ranked in the top 25 according to an article appearing in Journal of Real Estate Research in 2008.
Another analysis of refereed publications in the top three U.S. scholarly real estate journals finds that the faculty at GSU are the fifth most frequently published faculty in the Journal of Real Estate Research between 2000 and 2006. Department of Real Estate Associate Professor Dr. Karen M. Gibler was the seventh most frequently published individual author in that journal over the 7-year period and the only female researcher ranked for publishing in any of the three journals during this time period. The research results appear in a 2008 issue of the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education.
REIAC Distinguished Lecture and Portrait Unveiling
David McSwain, Vice President of AIG Global Investment Group, delivered the REIAC distinguished lecture on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. A portrait of Stephen Selig, President and Chairman of the Board of Selig Enterprises Inc. and the most recent inductee into the REIAC/GSU Hall of Distinction, was unveiled at the event. The ceremony occurred at 4:30 p.m. in the Rialto Center. The event was open to the public.
Gibler Speaks to GSA
Karen M. Gibler made a presentation on "The Changing Nature of Workspace" at the Southeast Sunbelt Region Office of the General Services Administration on February 5.
ARGUS Seminar Held
The department has offered its successful introductory ARGUS seminar that provides a working knowledge of the popular software program. The seminar consisted of two 4-hour sessions on successive Saturdays, held on the main GSU campus.
Views from the Top
The Real Estate Alumni Group held its annual premier economic forecasting event, Views from the Top, on January 8. This year's theme was "going green." The speakers were Dr. Rajeev Dhawan, Director of the Economic Forecasting Center at GSU, Casey Wold of Tishman Speyer, and Doug Gatli of the U.S. Green Building Council. Greg O'Brien of Transwestern served as moderator. Premier sponsors for the event are Jackson Oats Shaw and Troutman Sanders LLP.
